About Us

As a student in the Department of English, Comparative Literature, and Linguistics, you enter a community of researchers and educators who care intensely about the study of language, literature, writing, analysis, and creativity.  Our professors value learning and provide the support you need to discuss and research and to apply your knowledge in new and innovative ways.  You will have the opportunity to take classes from faculty who have completed advanced study in literature, comparative studies, Linguistics, creative writing, and a variety of cultural and historical traditions.  You will also have the opportunity to develop leadership skills in student service organizations across our disciplines, and to hone advanced research and communication skills through collaborative research with your fellow students and with faculty.

With Bachelor of Arts degrees in English Literature, Comparative Literature, and Linguistics as well as minors in Applied Language Science, Linguistics, Creative Writing, English, and Comparative Literature, we offer a wide range of diverse programs that will suit your academic and personal interests and your scholarly and career goals. 

Our majors prepare students for a wide range of careers that seek excellence in writing, reading, language awareness, and education.  Our alums are represented in diverse career paths including teachers, editors in chief, novelists, executive directors, attorneys, project managers, software engineers, technical writers, public relations directors, vice presidents of sales and marketing, photojournalists, professors, and production managers working at places such as the Irvine Unified School district, The Village Voice, Harper Collins, Nickelodeon, Mercedes Benz, Wildermuth Environmental, Aerojet General, Boeing, Chapman University, and Dreamworks Animation.
